Dehumidification Systems

Desiccant Silica Gel Rotors

All dehumidifiers from DST use the high quality SSCR rotor from Seibu Giken, Japan. Dehumidifiers from DST are continuously improved at our R & D department. Here, you can read more about the high technology rotor from Seibu Giken and out the different sorption principles, used in DST dehumidifiers.

SSCR Sorption Rotor

All DST desiccant dehumidifiers use the Seibu Giken silica gel rotor. In the Seibu Giken rotor the silica gel is chemically bonded to the structure, which means that there is no desiccant carry-over to the air. It also means an excellent lifetime. After 10 years of operation the Seibu Giken rotor retains more than 90% of its original capacity. Another important feature is that the Seibu Giken rotor can be washed if it becomes contaminated. This is especially important for rotors working under harsh conditions.

Seibu Giken was the first company to develop a silica gel rotor and is still the technology leader.

Tests carried out by the well-known Frauenhofer Institute show that no dust is carried over to the dry air in a Seibu Giken rotor. Tests on DST dehumidifiers placed in sewage stations have also shown that the rotor is bacteriostatic.

The adsorption rotor is manufactured from alternate layers of flat and corrugated sheets, impregnated with an active component called desiccant. It is made to form a vast number of axial air channels running parallel through the structure. As the air passes through the channels it is dried.

The rotor is the most important part of the dehumidifier. It is the rotor that determines the capacity and the lifetime of the unit. Hence you want a dependable, stable and efficient rotor. The following things are important to consider when choosing.

1 The desiccant material

Back in the fifties, when the desiccant rotor dehumidifier was invented, lithium chloride salt was used as the desiccant. Lithium chloride absorbs the moisture through a chemical reaction. The disadvantage of a salt impregnated rotor is that it can't withstand high humidity. Saturated air will cause the salt to partially leave the rotor and thereby decrease the capacity and cause corrosion of the dehumidifier. Today more and more dehumidifiers use silica gel rotors. The silica gel adsorbs the moisture, the water molecules adhere to the surface of the silica gel. The advantage is that it can withstand saturated air and, if the silica gel is chemically bonded to the rotor, it has a very long lifetime, up to ten years if taken well care of.

2 Will there be dust from the rotor?

Both lithium chloride and silica gel rotors containing loose desiccant will cause some dust to leave the rotor with the dry air. Apart from possible damage of dried materials the capacity of the rotor will deteriorate. Only rotors with chemically bonded silica gel will have no desiccant carry-over to the dry air.

3 Washability

If the rotor is contaminated by accident or used in applications with contaminated air, for example oil mist, it is important that the rotor is washable, and that you can wash it yourself! Having to leave the rotor away for washing is costly and causes a longer downtime.

4 Bacterial growth

Tests on a silica gel rotor used in a water sewage plant shows no bacteria formation on the rotor. This is thanks to the high temperature (above 120°C) when regenerating the rotor and to the low relative humidity in the dry air.

SSCR-H Bactericidal & Hygienic Rotor

DST offers a dehumidification rotor, specifically developed to maintain the desired indoor climate in the food and pharmaceutical industry. The SSCR-H can be installed in new or existing rotor-unit from Seibu Giken DST.

Small Dehumidifiers

Aquasorb

Aquasorb basically functions as a Consorb but the wet air flow is condensed in an air-chilled condenser instead of being led out. Thanks to the common fan for dry air and cool air, all energy is accumulated in the dry air. Aquasorb has a high dry airflow, which improves the drying effect.

Aquasorb-A-30B/Bp Dehumidifier

Aquasorb A-30B/Bp is a sorption dehumidifier that condenses out the moisture. The chassis is made of stainless steel, which is especially important in condensing units. The rotor is, as always, washable, all energy is accumulated in the dry air. Aquasorb operates at dew-points below 0°C.

Dehumidification System Control

Humidistats and Energy Saving for Dehumidifiers

DST offers everything from simple hygrostats to PLC-based moisture and temperature control. In most cases, if dehumidification installations are controlled well, you get a very short pay-off time in return. The Energy-saving brochure takes a look at control systems carefully adapted to suit the DST range of dehumidifiers. All variants are available fully assembled and tested. Investing in a good control system can result in considerable reductions in operating costs. At the same time, you are helping to preserve our environment – an important consideration if you hold environmental accreditation, or are thinking of applying for it.

One supplier

The process industry often makes stringent demands of climate – precise regulation is the name of the game. DST offers a number of systems to control both moisture and temperature. This means that you can avoid having to coordinate a number of installations: these will all be optimised and provided by one supplier.

Energy savings – three stages

Three DST control system stages are available. Stage one has been developed to cover smaller dehumidifiers. Stage two has been developed primarily for electricity and gas regenerated dehumidifiers, while stage three is mainly for steam and hot water regenerated dehumidifiers

Energy Saving & Humiditiy Control for Dehumidifiers

Energy Saving, step 1

A two-step hygrostat, e.g. EH-3, initially regulates down to approx. half capacity, then in the second stage it regulates down to zero.

Energy Saving, step 2

A control system regulates the dehumidification capacity from zero up to full capacity by regulating the regeneration heater, in binary or linear fashion, depending on the unit and the type of heater (electricity, steam or gas). The moisture sensor controls the heater by means of a regulator. In other cases, the moisture sensor supplied is fitted externally and wired to the distribution box for the dehumidifier.

Energy Saving, step 3

The system regulates the dehumidification capacity from around 20% up to 100%. Wet air flow, rotation rate of the rotor (in some cases) and the heater’s power output are regulated in parallel, resulting in better utilisation of energy compared with simply regulating the heater. A moisture sensor controls the wet air flow and, in some cases, the rotor speed, via a regulator. The regeneration temperature is maintained at a high level which ensures more efficient dehumidification.

Alternatively, the dehumidifier can be controlled by an external regulator which emits a 0-10 V signal to the dehumidifier.
